Renue by Science PET NMN Longevity Chews for Dogs, 60 soft chews, front of pack

NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a compound the body uses to make NAD+, a molecule every cell needs for normal energy metabolism. More UK owners are asking about NMN and NAD+ for their dogs, especially as they get older. The honest picture: research in dogs is early and small, short-term safety data looks reassuring, and no study shows NMN makes dogs live longer. This guide covers what we know, possible side effects, how much to give, and how to choose a product.

Quick answers

•       What is it? A building block the body turns into NAD+.

•       Is there evidence in dogs? A few small studies. They are interesting, but not proof of benefit.

•       Is it safe? Short-term studies at high doses reported only mild changes in some blood markers. Ask your vet if your dog has a health condition or takes medication.

• Side effects? None serious reported in short-term studies. Watch for stomach upset or signs of allergy when starting any new chew.

•       How much? Follow the product's feeding guide by weight. For our chews, that is 1 to 3 a day.

What is NMN?

NMN is a naturally occurring compound found in small amounts in some foods. Inside cells it is converted into NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). NAD+ is involved in turning food into energy and in many routine cell processes.

Studies in people and laboratory animals suggest NAD+ levels tend to fall with age. That is why researchers are studying NAD+ "precursors" such as NMN and nicotinamide riboside (NR), which the body can use to make it.

NMN vs NAD+ for dogs: what's the difference?

NAD+ is the molecule cells actually use. NMN is one of the building blocks the body uses to make it. You'll see products sold as "NAD+ for dogs" as well as "NMN for dogs", and it helps to know what's inside.

• NAD+ supplements for dogs. Many products marketed as NAD+ for dogs actually contain a precursor such as NMN or NR rather than NAD+ itself. Check the label for what each chew contains and how many milligrams.

• NMN supplements for dogs. NMN is the precursor used in most of the dog research discussed below, including the 2020 safety study.

• Is NAD+ safe for dogs? There is very little research on giving dogs NAD+ directly. Most of what we know comes from studies using precursors such as NMN. The same advice applies: use a product made for dogs, follow the feeding guide, and check with your vet if your dog has a health condition.

In short, if you're looking for NAD+ support for your dog in the UK, an NMN chew made for dogs is the option with the most dog-specific research behind it so far.

Why are UK dog owners interested in NMN?

Dogs are living longer, and owners want to support them well into their senior years. NMN has had a lot of attention in human wellness, and several brands now make dog-specific versions, usually as soft chews combined with familiar ingredients such as glucosamine and fish oil.

Most of these brands are in the US. Buying from overseas can mean slow delivery and unexpected import charges, which is one reason owners look for a UK stockist.

What the research in dogs shows so far

Three published studies are most often discussed. Each is useful, and each has clear limits.

Study

Dogs

What was given

What was found

Limits

10 healthy adult beagles

1,340 mg NMN a day for 14 days

Only mild increases in creatinine and uric acid

A short safety study, not a test of benefit

17 retired police dogs, average age 9 (NMN was one of three groups)

2.5 g NMN every 2 days

Two blood markers that tend to rise with age (IL-6 and TNF-α) fell

Very small groups, no untreated comparison group

70 senior dogs, 59 finished

A combination product: a senolytic plus an NAD+ precursor, not NMN alone

Owners reported better scores on a cognitive rating scale at 3 months

Large placebo effect; in-clinic tests showed no difference

What this means for you: the research supports continued interest, not firm promises. No study shows that NMN chews make dogs live longer, or that they prevent or treat any condition. Be wary of any product that says otherwise.

For scale, the 1,340 mg daily dose in the safety study is about 17 times the NMN in one of our chews (77 mg).

What does the latest research say? (Updated October 2026)

A small study published in 2026 in the Journal of Advanced Veterinary and Animal Research followed eight dogs aged 6 to 18 with raised levels of NT-proBNP, a blood marker vets use to check for strain on the heart. The dogs were given NMN by mouth for between two weeks and about two and a half months, with NT-proBNP re-checked every two to three weeks.

NT-proBNP fell in several dogs with milder problems, but continued to rise in dogs that already had advanced heart disease. The study was very small and had no comparison group, so it can't show that NMN works, and it did not test any commercial product, including PET NMN chews.

NMN supplements for dogs are not medicines and are not a treatment for heart disease. If your dog has a heart condition, follow your vet's advice and speak to them before adding any supplement.

Is NMN safe for dogs?

NMN appears to be well tolerated by dogs in the short term, but research is still limited. In a published 2020 safety study, healthy beagles were given NMN twice daily for 14 days. They remained healthy, with only a mild rise in some kidney-related blood markers (Frontiers in Pharmacology).

There are not yet long-term studies in dogs.

Always check with your vet before starting any new supplement, especially if your dog has a kidney or liver condition, is on medication, or is pregnant. Use a product made for dogs and follow the feeding guide on the pack. Our PET NMN chews contain fish oil, so they’re not suitable for dogs with a fish allergy.

NMN side effects in dogs: what to watch for

Side effects of NMN in dogs haven't been studied in depth, and there are no long-term studies yet. In the 2020 safety study, beagles given high doses (about 17 times one of our chews) stayed healthy, with only a mild rise in two kidney-related blood markers (creatinine and uric acid).

As with any new chew, introduce it gradually and keep an eye on your dog for the first couple of weeks. Stop and speak to your vet if you notice:

• Vomiting, diarrhoea or loss of appetite

• Itching, swelling or other signs of an allergic reaction (our chews contain fish and poultry ingredients)

• Unusual tiredness, thirst or changes in toileting

Dogs with kidney or liver conditions, dogs on medication, and pregnant or nursing dogs should only start NMN after speaking to a vet.

NMN dosage for dogs: how much to give

There is no official dose of NMN for dogs. Follow the feeding guide of the product you choose, which is usually set by body weight. For PET NMN Longevity Chews for Dogs (77 mg NMN per chew), the guide is:

Dog's weight

Chews a day

NMN a day

Up to 18 kg (40 lb)

1

77 mg

18 to 36 kg (41 to 80 lb)

2

154 mg

Over 36 kg (80 lb)

3

231 mg

Give the chew as a treat with or after food, and keep fresh water available.

How to choose the best NMN for dogs: 7 checks

1.      Made for dogs. Human NMN capsules aren't designed or dosed for dogs.

2.      Clear amount per chew. Look for the milligrams of NMN on the label, not just a "blend".

3.      A feeding guide by weight. Ideally in kilograms as well as pounds.

4.      A full ingredient list. Including flavourings and anything your dog may be allergic to.

5.      No disease claims. Supplements can't claim to treat, prevent or cure illness. Claims like that are a warning sign.

6.      A seller you can reach. A UK address, phone number and returns policy.

7.      UK stock. It arrives faster and avoids surprise import charges.

What about NMN for cats?

Cats need a product made for cats. Their metabolism and dosing differ from dogs', and some ingredients and flavourings used in dog chews aren't suitable for them. Never give a dog chew to a cat. If you have a cat, see PET NMN Longevity Chews for Cats.

FAQs

What's the best NMN for dogs? There's no single best product. The best choice is one made for dogs, with a clear NMN amount per chew, a feeding guide by weight, a full ingredient list, no disease claims, and a UK seller you can reach. See our 7 checks above.

Can I give my dog NAD+ instead of NMN? Many "NAD+ for dogs" products actually contain NMN or NR, which the body uses to make NAD+. There's very little research on giving dogs NAD+ directly, so NMN has more dog-specific evidence so far. Always use a product made for dogs.

Is NMN better than NR for dogs? Both are NAD+ precursors. There isn't enough research in dogs to say one is better.

How long before I see a difference? Every dog is different, and there's no reliable timeline. Keep up a balanced diet, exercise and regular vet check-ups.

Can I give my dog human NMN? We don't recommend it. Human supplements are dosed for people, and some contain sweeteners such as xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Use a product made for dogs.

Do I need a vet's prescription? No. NMN chews are not medicines. Still, speak to your vet if your dog has a health condition or takes medication.

Can I give NMN with other supplements or medication? Speak to your vet first, especially if your dog takes regular medication or has a kidney or liver condition.

Where can I buy NMN for dogs in the UK? You can buy PET NMN Longevity Chews for Dogs from Nompharma, a UK company based in Nottingham, with UK stock and fast delivery.
