NMN vs NR: What's the Difference?
This guide is for general education only. It isn't medical advice and isn't a recommendation to take any supplement.
NMN and NR are two closely related compounds, both related to vitamin B3, that the body can use to make NAD+. NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is one step closer to NAD+ than NR (nicotinamide riboside). Beyond that, the main differences are the molecule's size, the formats available and price.
Here's a plain-English comparison, what the research does and doesn't show, and how people usually choose.
What is NAD+?
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a molecule found in every cell, where it's part of normal cell chemistry. The body makes NAD+ from several building blocks, including NR and NMN.
What is NR?
NR, or nicotinamide riboside, is a compound related to vitamin B3, found in tiny amounts in milk. In the body, NR is converted into NMN, and then into NAD+.
What is NMN?
NMN, or nicotinamide mononucleotide, is NR with an extra phosphate group attached. That makes it a slightly larger molecule and puts it one step closer to NAD+. Small amounts are found in foods such as broccoli, cabbage and avocado.

What does the research say?
Researchers are studying both NMN and NR, but research in people is still early. Most studies have been small and short. There isn't enough evidence to say one is better than the other, and there are no authorised health claims for either in the UK. Be cautious of any website that promises specific results.
How people usually choose
Format: NMN comes in more formats. If you'd rather not swallow capsules, the powders and tablets are options.
Price per serving: compare the amount per daily serving, not just the price of the pot.
Liposomal or standard: both LIPO NMN and Lipo NR use Renue's liposomal format. Our guide Liposomal Supplements Explained explains what that means.
